On the north shore of Lake Superior, at the tip of Sibley Peninsula, stands a village of summer residences that has a unique and romantic history.
It was the site of the fabulously rich silver mine, Silver Islet.
For fourteen years between 1870 and 1884, this community was home to the miners, their families and the administrators of the richest off-shore silver mine in the world. Hundreds of visitors from across North America and beyond visited it and marveled at the beautiful location, the ingenious engineering, and the unbelievable wealth it produced.
The mine has been closed for 125 years, but Silver Islet still draws visitors from distant places. Today the lush, vividly coloured gardens are one of the sights that impress those who stroll the Avenue.
Take a walk through the village, discover its history, and meet the residents who developed these spectacular gardens
